Soil Management

Soil management is an important activity as it satiates demands of millions of people who are dependent on agricultural products. There are different techniques that are used for various types of soils.

Soil management is an important activity in context of agricultural and overall economic development of a particular country. Since lives of millions of people everywhere depend on agricultural products and goods, proper soil management has become extremely important.

Important Aspects of Soil Management
An important part of soil management is usage of latest technologies to ensure better productivity and better maintenance of the soil in question. Adequate amount of investment, water, labor and energy are also important parts of soil management.

It has been observed that proper execution of functions like application of fertilizers and water, tillage operations, management of crops, seeding and weed control are important for soil management to be effective and produce desired results.

Soil Management Practices
There are soil management practices that are in use and are essential for soil management to be optimally effective. Some major soil management practices are as follows:
  • usage of secondary and micro-nutrients
  • soil testing
  • usage of organic manure and bio-fertilizers
  • soil and water conservation
It needs to be remembered that various types of soils require different types of management techniques. In case of black soil following soil management techniques are used:
  • addition of organic matter
  • good soil tilth
  • frequent irrigation
  • proper drainage
Important areas in case of looking after dry soil are stability of yield and maintenance of fertility of soil. Following are certain techniques that are used for managing dry soil:
  • cultivating crops that are adaptable and mature early and have horizontal leaves and a branched and ramified and deep system of roots
  • using intercropping or mixed cultivation techniques
  • maintenance of proper plant population for every unit
  • usage of mulches
  • seeding crops in proper soil moisture or at a proper time for maximizing rainfall
  • usage of agri-chemicals
  • doing away with weeds
Following are certain techniques that are used to manage alkali and saline soils:
  • leaching of salts
  • green manuring
  • scraping
  • usage of molasses
  • usage of sulphur
  • cultivating crops with salt tolerance capabilities
  • usage of acidifying fertilizers
