Forests, Reforestation and Afforestation

It is environmentally important to carry out activities like afforestation and reforestation from an environmental point of view.

Forests, reforestation and afforestation are three interconnected terms that have taken added importance in recent environmental scenario. Forests are considered to be vital from an environmental point of view. A lot of efforts are being made to properly execute reforestation and afforestation activities so that a proper ecological balance may be maintained.

Reforestation
Reforestation may be explained as an activity whereby damaged woodlands and forests are replenished with tree stock that is native to that particular place. Some major benefits of reforestation are increased availability of resources and maintenance of a proper ecological system. Reforestation can also make a forest a prominent carbon sink.

There are two major types of reforestation – natural and artificial. Reforestation has a major impact on forest and climate. It can play a major role in bringing down levels of global warming. However, reforestation has to be done properly for it to be effective. There are certain risks that are associated with reforestation.

For instance, in case a reforested forest is afflicted with an outbreak of harmful insects or forest fire, carbon stored in that particular area would go back to atmosphere. Reforestation and afforestation are similar concepts.

s Difficulties of Afforestation
It is often difficult to carry out afforestation in areas where soil has been damaged. This is because once in arid zones forest area is damaged or destroyed, soil becomes dry at a short space of time. This poses problems for afforestation in such areas as soil does not allow newly planted trees to thrive properly.

Afforestation throughout World
All over the world there have been a lot of efforts to carry out afforestation. Efforts in Brazil have not been too fruitful when judged in context of Amazonian rainforest. China too is trying to carry out effective afforestation through projects like Green Wall of China.

In European Union farmers have been financially assisted in order to carry out afforestation. It has been difficult to carry out afforestation in Iran as a result of inclement soil conditions. Forests of Iran like oak, pistacio and almond have been adversely affected as has been timber industry of China.
