Greenhouse gas reduction |
|
Greenhouse gas reduction initiative aims at conserving fossil fuel, sequestering carbon, improving energy efficiency, and recovering methane. Greenhouse gas reduction is an initiative of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The ulterior objective of greenhouse gas reduction is achievement of intensity goal.
The ratio between greenhouse gas emissions to gross economic output is termed greenhouse gas intensity. US government is aiming for reducing its intensity ratio from 183 metric tons per US $ million in 2002 to 151 metric tons per US $ million in 2012. EPA through near-term endeavors motivates consumers, manufacturing units, and commercial bodies to reduce emission of greenhouse gases. Following are some of the programs set up by EPA to control pollutant emission.
Climate leaders – This partnership formed between government and industries work towards developing cleaner environment. Companies part of this agreement set aggressive targets towards reduction of greenhouse gas emission into the environment.
Clean energy-environment state partnership - This voluntary partnership between the state and federal governments encourages formulation and implementation of cost-effective processes of environment cleanliness. The partnership promotes generation and distribution of clean power, nurturing renewable energy sources, and promotion of energy efficiency.
Combined Heat and Power Partnership – Combined heat and power (CHP) is an effective method of producing clean, efficient, and reliable thermal energy from a single source of fuel. CHP partnership aims at reducing the harmful impact on the environment caused by power generation. This partnership involves state and local governments, energy users, and CHP industry.
Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 introduced ‘energy star’, a voluntary labeling program that identifies and promotes energy efficient products which have restricted emissions of greenhouse gases.
