The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is an organization working worldwide for the protection of ecologically important waters and lands for people and nature. The organization was founded in 1951. Since its founding it has –
  • Protected 5,000 miles of rivers and 117 million acres of land. It also manages more than 100 marine conservation projects all over the world.
  • There are over 1 million members
  • Nature Conservancy works in all the 50 US states and in more than 30 countries. It protects habitats from coral reefs to grasslands, from Alaska to Australia. The organization tackles conservation threats to climate change, invasive species, fresh water, fire, marine ecosystems and forests.
Nature Conservancy has been successful in conservation work because of-
  • Its science-based approach which is supported by more than 700 staff scientists
  • It follows non-confrontational and practical solutions
  • The organization works together with businesses, multilateral institutions, indigenous communities, governments and individuals.
Conservation by Design is a science-based planning process which helps to identify the high-priority places which if conserved will guarantee biodiversity over a long period. There are thousands of such places worldwide and by protecting and managing them; the natural world’s future can be secured.

There are seven priority conservation initiatives which address the main threats to conservation. These focus on protected areas, climate change, fire, invasive species, protected areas, freshwater, marine and forests.

Some of the ways through which Nature Conservancy achieves its mission are through-
  • Conservation by Design
  • Private Lands Conservation
  • Nature Travel
  • Partners
  • Conservation-friendly public policies
  • Funding for Conservation
