How to offset your carbon emissions

Corporates running big factories and plants often end up exceeding their stipulated level of carbon emissions. They have to find a method to offset carbon emissions.

Carbon emission offsets may be required by individuals, companies, or governments who may have exceeded their carbon emission levels through use of transport, electricity, and other sources. According to some estimates, nearly $91 million worth of carbon offsets were purchased in 2006.

Carbon emission reduction projects
Carbon emission reduction projects are specifically executed in order to earn carbon credits. Examples of this type of project include wind farms, hydroelectric dams, and biomass energy. Corporate can offset carbon emissions by taking over projects that help them to earn carbon credits.

Carbon credits
Carbon credits can be earned by reducing emission of greenhouse gases. For achieving reduction of carbon emission, a carbon credit certificate of proportionate value is earned. These carbon credits are traded in futures market. Individuals, corporates, or nations who have exceeded their carbon emission levels can offset it by purchasing carbon credits.

How do carbon credits and offsets benefit the environment?
Carbon emission credits and offsets benefit earth's environment by promoting use of cleaner technologies. It also helps in promoting reforestation and use of clean energy.

Individuals or organizations can purchase carbon credits from entities that have managed to maintain lower levels of carbon emissions. This encourages people to earn carbon credits so that they can sell it to others who want to offset their exceeded level of carbon emissions.

Criticisms
Some experts doubt efficacy of carbon credit offsets in improving environmental standards. They argue that carbon credit offsets give a leeway to entities who exceed their carbon emission levels since they now have an option by which they can offset their carbon emissions.
