Carbon Intensity

Process of carbon intensity is an indicator of levels of emission of carbon dioxide in a particular country. It has been seen that countries like Chad, Cambodia and Switzerland have highest levels of carbon intensity.

The term carbon intensity can refer to a ratio of carbon dioxide to energy. It is primarily used for measuring environmental viability of particular fuels. It may also be explained as a ratio between Gross Domestic Product and carbon emissions of a particular country.

Carbon Intensity in US
Plans are on in US on reducing carbon intensity. It is being assumed that 18% of present level may be reduced by 2012. This has come under criticism from environmentalists since reduction in levels of carbon intensity may be achieved through bringing down levels of carbon output and increase of Gross Domestic Product.

Levels of carbon intensity US economy came down by 17% from 1990 to 2000. However, in that same period aggregate carbon emissions went up by 14%. US National Environmental trust anointed carbon intensity as a trick of bookkeeping in 2002. According to them this concept allowed authorities to overlook issues related to global warming and thus permit levels of carbon emissions to go up and assume dangerous proportions.
