Carbon budget is an important concept in the modern day environmental scenario. It is primarily a balance of exchanges of carbon. It is also important to understand carbon cycle as it is important in the context of carbon budget.
Gaining a proper understanding of carbon budget has become crucial nowadays in the context of global environmental scenario. The term global carbon budget means balance of exchanges of carbon. Carbon budget may be measured in terms of reservoirs of carbon as well as a particular loop. An inspection into carbon budget can help one understand whether a particular reservoir or a pool is acting as a sink or a source of carbon dioxide.
Present Day Condition of Carbon Cycle
It is important to understand present day condition of carbon cycle. Nowadays, a significant reason of climatic changes has been increased emission of carbon from burning of petroleum, coal or similar fossil fuels.
Rate of climate change can be predicted accurately if one is able to understand condition of carbon sinks, which absorb carbon dioxide from atmosphere and sources of carbon dioxide. It is assumed that carbon dioxide sinks in oceans and land are on verge of being insignificant.
It has been observed that acidity in oceans is increasing and is about to assume terrifying proportions. In recent times there has been an increase in number of forest fires in both northern and tropical areas.
It is absolutely necessary to preserve and, if possible, increase the strength of these sinks or else it would lead increased occurrence of a dreaded process named global warming. It would not also be that easy to manage global warming once these sinks become less potent.
