G8 Climate Change Roundtable

G8 Climatic Change Roundtable, held on July 2005, addressed the issue of climatic change and developed guidelines that G8 countries were expected to follow in order to reduce/eliminate climatic changes.

G8 Climatic Change Roundtable, constituted on January 2005, conducted its first meeting in the month of July in Gleneagles, Scotland. This roundtable was constituted at the World Economic Forum held in Davos in 2005.

The main reason for setting up this body was to deal with issues related to climatic change and to eliminate/reduce the same. This roundtable was set up by 23 main international business houses.

The group formulated certain principles that they believed would guide the G8 countries in mitigating the climatic change. Some such principles include globalized solutions, rational policies and actions, adopting a wholesome approach towards the issue and others.

The G8 Climatic Change Roundtable suggested that governments of G8 countries should use their resources in assessing the extent of that is likely to be caused to human health and the environment as a whole. Besides, they should also adopt measures that would stabilize the climatic changes and improve climate change observation techniques.

As per this roundtable, any policy adopted should meet the following objectives:
  • Bring about technological innovation
  • Creating a long term impact
  • Ensuring increased investments towards low carbon economic growth
  • Setting up of common system of measurement
  • Making use of supply chain and purchasing powers.
It has been suggested by the G8 Climatic Change Roundtable that if business houses and government should work together towards elimination of the climatic change issue. It is believed that a well developed program and meaningful policies will help in arriving at a globalized solution to the problem.
