Major sources of pollution and greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gases are a major source of environmental pollution. Of late earth’s stratosphere has seen a substantial rise in greenhouse gas pollution due to hike in airplane traffic. It is interesting to note that 2008 global economic slowdown has failed to rope in the rise in global greenhouse gas pollution.

Global economy has slowly but steadily entered a slowdown phase since 2007. Situation remains unchanged even in 2008. This economic meltdown has been triggered off by US mortgage loan crisis. However this decline in global output and employment has failed to substantially bring down rate of greenhouse gas induced global pollution. Carbon dioxide emissions were rising steadily in 2007 as per available latest data. US and China were leaders in this respect in 2007. This hike in emission of greenhouse gases is estimated to increase global temperature. Global warming has disastrous consequence in form of melting of icebergs and resultant hike in sea levels, change in weather patterns and problems of water supply to name a few. Among developing nations China and India account for more than 50% of world carbon dioxide emissions. However a substantial portion of Chinese emissions emanate from its production activities meant for developed nations. In past decade, emissions globally have risen four times. This has been despite best efforts of international Kyoto Protocol aimed at curtailment of greenhouse gas pollution. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration stood at around 383 parts-per-million in 2007. Indiscriminate felling down of trees and burning of fossil fuels has made matter worse in respect to greenhouse gas pollution. Greenhouse gas pollution has led to a rise in both oceanic and atmospheric temperatures. Bottom line is that for achieving a greener, cleaner and sustainable tomorrow present generations have to optimize use of greenhouse gases.
